My journey in street photography began with a consulting job that had me moving from city to city every few months. I rarely knew anyone where I landed, so I started taking long walks with my camera. Over many years, I explored shooting buildings, shadows, shapes, and colors. Then I dared to take pictures of PEOPLE. Then I took pictures of people with buildings, shadows, shapes, and colors, and so on. My growth as a photographer has taken place in fits and starts over a couple of decades. I’ve been lucky to encounter people along the way who have introduced me to one new thing at a time, giving me the chance to mull over each idea or technique, take loads of derivative pictures, experiment some more, and accommodate it in a way that begins to feel like my own. This has included introductions to the work of remarkable photographers of the past and present, concepts like layering and flash photography, and even the deceptively challenging act of finding a scene and waiting for action to unfold. I started entering contests in 2021 without high expectations. Since then, I have explored local and national group shows, regional solo shows, and international competitions and festivals. I’ve especially valued connecting with passionate street photographers around the world through groups like Rome Photo Lab, Pure Street Photography, Street Photography Gallery, Women in Street, and many more.
